The picture depicts Union Captain Henry A. Durivage of the 2nd Massachusetts Cavalry Battalion. He went to war and never returned, nor ever saw the finished portrait. The ptg. measures 56 x 43.5, 29.5 x 42 w/out frame. Oil on canvas.
Carpenter, the artist, was a well known painter and had done portraits for the likes of Abraham Lincoln and many others.
