Ceylon Court/Columbian Exposition library table from the Ceylon exhibit (known as Sri Lanka after 1972), c.1893, Chicago, large form with inlaid decoration and five hidden drawers with no pulls, handwritten notes behind one drawer " I Ceylon Estate II Pier 78 Ryerson Estate 1954-1977 III Ara Glen 1977-1982", original finish, 72"w x 42"d x 30"h, good condition. This original structure of the Ceylon Court residence, Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, was formerly the Singhalese Villa from the Ceylon government at the Columbian Exposition at Chicago, 1893. At the close of the exhibition, the structure was purchased by F.R. Chandler, who had it dismantled and moved to Lake Geneva, where it was rebuilt on property on Mannings Point. The building was a reproduction of a Buddhist temple and was constructed of woods native to Ceylon. The architect of the Villa was listed as H.F. Tomalin. A copy of Lake Geneva: Newport of the West with information about the estate and photographs is included with the lot.
