octagonal form, fluted with neoclassical draped swags and acanthus leaf decoration, beaded borders, no monogram, unmarked, 11-1/2 in. Both repaired at base of socket, one repaired at top of pedestal base, loss to silver, small dents, replaced felt. Provenance: Purchased from the estate of Mrs. Boor of Columbia, Tennessee, at Irene Brown Auction, circa 1963. At the auction, it was announced that the candlesticks had belonged to George Washington. George Washington was known to have purchased four sets of Old Sheffield plate candlesticks, including a nearly identical pair, in 1796. A very closely related pair of Sheffield plate candlesticks with drapery swags are at Mount Vernon; see Kataryn Buhler, [Mount Vernon Silver], Mount Vernon, Virginia, 1957, pages 41-43, copy of book accompanies lot.
