Uncle Jack Dey. Bears in the Stream, c. 1977. Enamel on wood board which Dey cut to fit frame, 44" w x 32" h (huge!), including artist made frame. According to the consignor, a friend and neighbor of Dey, this was Dey's last painting and one that Dey considered his MASTERPIECE. We absolutely agree! Lot includes a two-page letter which was either written by Dey or neighbor, Frank Walsh, describing the inspiration for this piece. Est. $8,000-10,000 Ship: $75. John William "Uncle Jack" Dey, 1912 - 1978, VA. Dey's paintings tell stories some true, some imagined often with a tongue in-cheek sense of humor. Many of his paintings include animals and people he admired--and sometimes people he disliked, shown in uncomfortable positions. Dey worked as a cop for 13 years and earned the nick name "Uncle Jack" from neighborhood children. Shortly after leaving the police force, Uncle Jack started to paint. Dey's works are highly collectible and can be found in some of the most prominent self-taught art collections in the world!
