James Castle, 1900-1977. Untitled, c. 1940's-50's. Double-sided drawing. Spit and soot on cardboard. Image is 9" w x 6" h. 17.5" w x 15", nicely framed to display both sides. Purchased at the first major exhibition of Castle's work in Chicago through John Ollman, direct from the Castle Estate. Est. $10,000-15,000 Ship: $25. James Castle was born deaf, never learned to speak, read or write or sign. His drawings were his language of expression. Castle's parents ran the local general store and Post Office. Since he rarely strayed far from his family home, he spent his entire life isolated from the outside world. It has been suggested that this isolation actually fed his genius Castle was also quite inventive with his drawings and his use of media. Among many other improvised materials, Castle created his signature grahite-like substance by combining stove soot and his own saliva on the tips of sharpened sticks.
