Purvis Young, b. 1943. Figures in the City. Paint on canvas and wood. 48.5" w x 80" h. (Huge!) Est. $2,000-4,000 Ship: $200. Self-taught and self-educated and living near poverty, Young has been painting from the streets of Overtown, Miami, since the 1970's, when a mural a city block long captured the attention of dealers, collectors, and academics alike. More than anything else, Purvis is a story teller. Even the media he uses makes a social commentary on the hard life in the neglected community he calls home. He uses the scrap and resued boards found in his broken down neighborhood to create his art. Young's work is the subject of books and shows on important 20th c. self-taught art.
