Ulysses Davis, 1913-1990. Fantasy Figure who is both male and female. Carved and painted wood. 9" x 20" x 18". This is an extremely rare opportunity to own a fantastic piece by a Southern Master carver. Est. $5,000-8,000 Ship: $45. A Slotin Auction Favorite! Ulysses Davis, a railroad worker and barber from Savannah, GA, developed his wood-carving skill on his own over a period of more than fifty years. Despite persistent pleas from art collectors and dealers, Davis refused to sell his works during his lifetime with very fewexceptions. He was once quoted saying, "I may not have much money, but if I were to sell all of these, then I would really be poor." Davis' dream to have his sculptures put on display came true as the majority of his lifelong collection is now housed in two galleries of the historic 1867 Beach Institute, the first building constructed for African American education in Savannah.
