Jacob Maentel(American, 1763-1863), unusual oversized Pennsylvania watercolor and ink on paper portrait of hatter John Mays of Schaefferstown, Lebanon County, wearing a blue suit holding a top hat in one hand and standing in his millinery before shelves of top hats, done in shades of blue, gray, tan, and white, 15 1/2'' x 12 1/2''. Illustrated in Sunbonnets and Shoofly Pies, A Pennsylvania Dutch Cultural History by John J. Stoudt, p.114.

Glued overall to cardboard backing. 2" tear to window area. Small repair to one foot area. Top reduced by approx. 1/8-1/4". Very minor sporadic foxing.
