AN ÄELTESTE VOLKSTEDT PORCELAIN CHESS SET, German, circa 1920, one side with an orange glaze, the other side in white, all with gilt highlights, kings wearing crowns, holding sceptres and wearing pantaloons, queens as orientals in the lotus postion and on a raised base, bishops as counsellers with wispy beards and holding curved scimitars, knights as horses with raised hooves, rooks as elephants bearing pagodas, pawns as squatting chinamen wearing coolie hats, the king 10cm high, the pawn 4.5cm high, all with blue glaze undermark, in a fitted cloth covered display case, 27cm wide.
