Description

A "RÉGENCE PATTERN" BOXWOOD CHESS SET, probably French, one side in black, the other side left natural, with carved horses' heads for knights, the king 6.7cm high, the pawn 3.3cm high.

***There was a frequent exchange of tools, especially stencils, between turners in the French Alps (Jura) and Central Germany, and earlier in the Erzebirge. It is know that the German carver, Horst Schreiter of Borstendorf, carved several hundred thousand knight heads for the local factories and their export businesses, including France..
