Condition/Details: This is a rare First Edition of this beautiful work, printed c1860. The complete set is profusely illustrated with fabulous engravings of scenes in nineteenth-century China by Thomas Allom. These illustrations were vital in providing the Western world with one of the first thorough depictions of what China actually looked like. Please refer to the photos for a sampling of these excellent illustrations. The plates are accompanied by a descriptive narrative by G. N. Wright. The volumes have been professionally re-bound or re-covered in black cloth, and show little external wear. The text is solidly bound, and the pages and plates show some moisture marking and occasional spotting, with usual library markings.
