Description
A very nice Japanese ivory cane of rats, carved in relief. The elephant ivory cylindrical handle is 4 2/3” high a 7/8” across the top. It is configured octagonally and then into round, and it depicts in fine detail, three low-relief carved rats that have raided a treasure bag of a tasseled key. Two have jet eyes and one coral. There is a thin gold ring collar on a malacca shaft with a 1” burnished brass and iron ferrule. The overall length is 34 7/8” and the condition is very good. It is perhaps American, made with an imported handle, ca 1890. It is a very fine piece that demonstrates the Japanese use of animals to convey whimsy and humor.
