Item Details
Description
A great signed Japanese ball cane with shibayama bugs. The elephant ivory ball handle is 1 1/2” high and 1 1/2” in diameter. It is wonderfully inlaid with pieces of Mother of Pearl, shades of different horn, abalone, and coral fashioned into randomly placed bugs. The insects are etched and inked with antennae and legs in the realistic shibayama manner. The stem of the handle is signed by the maker in red ink. There is a 1/4” replaced silver collar Birmingham hallmarked for the mid 20th Century. The handle is mounted on an ebony shaft with a 1 1/4” ivory ferrule. The overall length is 36 1/4” and the condition is very good. It is English, made with a ca 1900 imported handle, and it is a very fine Japanese shibayama example of the kind.
