Sullivan County, Tennessee redware cream pot, Cain pottery (also referred to as Great Road pottery). Lead glazed, sine wave and incised lines bordering around the upper midsection, flaring rim, beaded foot, bottom with glaze drips. Provenance - found in Sullivan County. Condition - glaze flaking on lower midsection of one side, two older shallow chips to rim, otherwise excellent. Height 5 3/4". 19th century. Comparison of glazes for lots 15 and 16 show similarities in a characteristic lead glaze phenomena with brown/black speckling. This glazing phenomena has been noted on signed Cain pottery forms. For additional examples of pottery from the East Tennessee area, refer to "Earthenware Potters Along The Great Road in Virginia and Tennessee," Moore, J. Roderick, The Magazine Antiques, September 1983, pp. 528-537.
