Sullivan County, Tennessee redware jug, Cain pottery (also referred to as Great Road pottery). Lead glazed jug with smoothed, extruded handle, sine wave and incised lines bordering around the upper bulbous midsection, ringed rim collar, beaded foot, bottom unglazed with glazing drip. Single thumb print to handle terminus. Provenance - found in Sullivan County. Condition - glazing voids appear to be problem in the firing versus wear, otherwise excellent. Height 7 1/4". 19th century. Comparison of glazes for lots 16 and 15 show similarities in a characteristic lead glaze phenomena with brown/black speckling. This glazing phenomena has been noted on signed Cain pottery forms. Roderick, The Magazine Antiques, September 1983, pp. 528-537.
