Rare and important dated Edgefield, South Carolina jug, kaolin slip trailed floral motif around a "3" (denoting gallon capacity) and "1852" date. Attributed to Thomas Chandler. Light green alkaline glaze, tapered rim, and large pulled handle. Circular stamp below kaolin slip decoration near base of jug. Unglazed red clay bottom. Condition - glued crack at base. Minor wear to kaolin slip trailing. All else excellent. Height 16 5/8". Circa 1852. Note - dated pottery vessels attributed to Thomas Chandler are rare and the slip decorated "1852" date is significant for Chandler. Howard Smith's Index of Southern Potters, 1982 and 1986, states Chandler was no longer working with Trapp by 1850 but had set up his own operation less than a mile from the Trapp & Chandler site. This last pottery was operational for a short period because of Chandler's ill health. Chandler was known to have written his will in 1852. Smith also states Chandler died in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina on July 21, 1854. Cinda Baldwin states in Great & Noble Jar that Chandler employed eleven slave and journeyman potters in 1850 at a cost of $165/month. Photos of a very similar Chandler attributed jug are available upon request. The comparison jug has a floral slip decoration and similar handle and rim type to this 1852 example.
