Redware pitcher attributed to the Cain pottery of Sullivan County, Tennessee. Provenance - John Gordon collection, NYC. Lead glazed pitcher consists of manganese splotched decoration on body and handle. Yellow slip splotching also evident. Pulled handle, unglazed bottom. Condition - UV light indicates minor rim restoration on the upper left side near spout, a small portion of manganese decoration flouresces under UV light on upper handle. A couple of old, shallow chips to base and three or four glaze flakes on inside top of rim. Height 11 3/4". 19th century. Note - the rare yellow slip streaking on this pitcher has been noted on another manganese decorated pitcher found in Washington, County, Virginia (inquire for photo of similar glazed example).
