Edgefield South Carolina stoneware jar, marked near base with a "C" mark attributed to the Pottersville Stoneware Manufactory, Edgefield District of South Carolina. "Alkaline-glazed stoneware sherds recovered from the site of the Pottersville Manufactory are stamped or incised with a variety of marks, consisting of single or paired letters or symbols placed just above the base of the vessels. The placement and distinctive style of these marks make them an important tool for the identification of early Pottersville ware. Pottersville may have been the earliest site where alkaline glazed stoneware was produced in Edgefield." Crossroads of Clay, McKissick Museum. Marks on the base of Abner Landrum's pottery include single incised letters B, C, and a backwards S as well as other symbols. Abner Landrum operated the pottery from 1819-1828. Incised rings as visible on the jar are also typical of early Pottersville jars. Condition - several worn chips around the circumference of the jar rim, minor chips under one handle, some exfoliation of glaze. Height 14 3/4". Circa 1820-1830.
