Early TN walnut pie safe with intricately punched urn tins, Washington County, Tennessee. This safe is illustrated in The Art and Mystery of Tennessee Furniture, Harsh and Williams, p. 164, figure 192. Also illustrated in J. Roderick Moore’s “Wythe County, Virginia, punched tin: its influence and imitators” article, Antiques Magazine, September 1984, figure 22, p. 612. Two large cupboard doors with inset tins containing stylized urn, grape, and foilage designs. Similar tin designs are in the case sides. The central stile separating the doors has an inlaid band. The case stiles taper to form the feet. Condition - hinge repairs, old tin repair to mortise and tendon joints on right door. Old, cleaned surface. Dimensions 43 1/2" height x 50" width x 17" depth. Second quarter of 19th century. The tapered feet, inlaid central stile, and intricate punch tins are characteristics of the earliest safes from the East Tennessee region.
