Folk art carving of cane handle by Miles Beam (1906-1986), China Grove, NC. This carving was found with an entire box of carvings from the artist's estate and contained several carved cane handles that apparently were never attached to the cane shafts. These carvings were featured on a segment of PBS Antiques Roadshow in Charlotte, North Carolina. The carving shows the contrasts of the monkey appendages in a darker bark while using gold screw heads for the monkey's eyes. Condition - old patina, age crack in side of monkey face (visible in photos above), otherwise excellent. Length of monkey carving from head to tail, 10". Circa 1930s.
