DESCRIPTION: William Zorach (American, 1887-1966). Bronze sculpture. Clarissa. Signed and numbered to base "Zorach 2/8". The making of this sculpture was featured in an article on Zorach in the May 31, 1948 issue of Life Magazine. A copy of this issue is included with the sale. PROVENANCE: Consigned by the original owner who was a friend of the artist's son and purchased it from his studio in Brooklyn Heights in the 1980's. William Zorach was born in Eurburg, Lithuania in 1887. His family emigrated to Cleveland, Ohio in 1891. He showed early artistic talent and by seventh grade was studying lithography at the Cleveland School of Art. He moved to New York in 1907 to study at the National Academy of Design and later studied in Paris at La Palette in 1910. After his return to the states, he held his first solo exhibition. Shortly thereafter, he and his new wife Marguerite Thompson, another artist, opened a studio in New York City. After 1922, Zorach switched from painting to sculpture and soon became one of the country's premier artists, honored with multiple commissions and exhibitions around the country. His works are part of the permanent collections of over fifty institutions and museums, including the Smithsonian, Museum of Fine Art-Boston, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Portland Museum and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
