Lord Roberts of Kandahar, commanded the British army in the time of high colonialism. Something from his biography by Hannah seems quite ironic today: "he will chiefly be remembered as the man who curbed the unruly spirit of the treacherous Afghans." Plus a later cabinet card of General John French, who served in the Boer War and later WWI, and one of Sir Douglas Haig, who served under French in WWI.
