The history of this carnival can be found at www. skerbeck.com/history.php. Their carnivals are still a major recreational activity in the Midwest. This lot consists of several photographs: a) Founder Frank Skerbeck balancing a column on his legs. The left side of the backdrop is seen. This is a Cabinet Card by A. Larson, Minneapolis. Small scrape at left. Notations on verso. [D3]; b) Joe Skerbeck at the age of 10, atop a bottle-supported ladder. Also by Larson. [2]; c) Joe Skerbeck, doing a contortion. By Saurman, St. Joseph, Mo. Slightly light [2+]; d) Gus Skerbeck at the age of 12, doing a similar contortion. By Morgan Bros., Antigo, Wis. Annotated, with light soil [2;] d) Refugio Meza, "Contorcionista Espanola," holding flags in a terrific backward position atop 3 bottles. By Lawson & Ferguson, Columbus, Ind., with back stamp for Daniel Meza "Special Performer." [3]; e) Card-mounted photograph of Joe Skerbeck doing a handstand atop chairs with legs around his head [3-]; f) Finally, a large 9 3/4" x 7 3/4" gelatin silver print shows Joe suspended up on a wire in front of the opera house in Independence Wisconsin in 1913.
