Description: Georg Kolbe was the leading German figure sculptor of his generation, in a vigorous, modern, simplified classical style similar to Aristide Maillol of France. Many of Kolbe's 1000 sculptures were destroyed by confiscation, bombing and melting for war purposes. His sculptures are in many museum collections in Europe, USA and Russia, among them the Museum of Modern Art New York, and the Moderna Museet, Stockholm. A cast of this work can be found in the collection of the Georg Kolbe Museum
Signature: "monogramed GK within the cast of the base, left center. Foundry stamp H. Noack Berlin Friedenau on side of base, under left foot. Identified on label underneath from San Francisco Museum of Art, & Buchholz Gallery New York. The authenticity of this work has been confirmed via photograph by Dr. Ursel Berger formerly of the Georg Kolbe Museum, Berlin; Berger, Ursel: Georg Kolbe - Leben und Werk. Mit dem Katalog der Kolbe-Plastiken im Georg-Kolbe-Museum, Berlin 1990; 2. Auflage Berlin 1994, Nr. 95.
