Description
(1) Rocking Chair manufactured by the P & P Chair Company of Asheboro, North Carolina and used by the President at the Kennedy compound in Hyannis Port, his Squaw Island residence as well as at Otis AFB Hospital during Mrs. Kennedy's convalescence period subsequent to the birth of their son, Patrick. The chair is equipped with special padding selected and prescribed by President Kennedy's personal physician, Dr. Janet Travell who furnished Captain Louis H. Dixon, Jr., Otis Air Force Base with the original special padding. Included with the instructions was a note from the White House, undated and "marked" to Colonel McHugh from "Pam" (Pamela Turnure Jackie's secretary) listing the specification requirements. It should be noted that a slight deviation was made to the fastening for the cushions; i.e., snaps were used instead of ties under the direction of Dr. Travell because the "children" were continually untying the knots. The oak rocking chair which remains completely intact with the exception of an area of minor wear (and repair) from the President's left elbow and is marked "John F. Kennedy #2" under each arm. The chair's overall condition is good with minor scattered wear to surface and undisplaced caning (not examined under cushions) *Note: Accompanied with this lot are (2) typewritten and notarized letters signed Colonel Rudolph B. Walters, USAF Commander dated March 10, 1964 and Captain Louis H. Dixon, Jr. USAF Top Drawer Project Director dated March 11, 1964 which included "(1) Attached Memorandum for Record" dated 3 May '61 attesting to the Presidential provenance, its use, Dr.'s prescription, identifiable markings and 5 x 4 inch photograph of the chair. (1) Mimeographic copy of "Office of the Air Force to the President", detailing the planning for a Presidential visit 27pp. dated February 3, 1961. (1) "The Marriage of Jack and Jacqueline Kennedy Did Love Come Too Late?" by Ralph G. Martin, "Good Housekeeping" magazine, September 1983. Together with a 4 x 6 inch photograph reprint of John F. Kennedy's last birthday party, 1963 aboard the yacht "Sequoia" which includes John F. Kennedy seated in rocker with cushions attached by snaps.
