Western Union Press message signed by Harry Heilman (HOF 1952). Back in the 1930's and 1940's the radio announcers didn't travel with the teams. Instead, when the team was on the road, the announcer went to their home ballpark where there was a teletype message machine. They would hook up to the pressroom at the ballpark where the team was playing and someone there would send a running description of the game back to them. They would then re-create the game from the information received and make it sound very real. Overall size: 5 x 8½. This is from the Ken Best Collection; he began this collection in 1947. NOTE FROM KEN BEST: This was obtained sometime during the summer of 1947 at Mackinaw, Michigan. Harry Heilman was the announcer for the Detroit Tigers at that time and he was doing a remote of a game between the Tigers and the St. Louis Browns. It was very interesting watching him and he was kind enough to tear off a section of the message and sign it for me. Heilman made the pencil mark on the paper. As I watched him I saw him mark the paper whenever he took a little break.
Condition reportVery good.
