Item Details
Description
The prototype Official 1993 American Automobile Centennial Commemorative reproduction of a 1893 Duryea, the first successful gas powered car built in the United States by brothers Frank and Charles Duryea. This horseless carriage prototype was purchased by the current owner from John M. Parks's American Automobile Centennial Inc., and is noted as the forerunner of five reproductions manufactured by American Automobile Centennial Inc., of Dunlap, IL during 1993 and 1994. The Duryea is powered by a 4 cycle, 1-cylinder, 18 cu. in. overhead valve air cooled 9 horse power engine can reach a top speed of app. 12 mph., and it has a 12-volt electric system for electric lamps and for an electric sound system that recreates the "old car" sound. With the top up, the height is app. 82"; top down, app. 65". The wheelbase is 53.75", the length is 96.5", the width 65.75", and the vehicle weights app. 830 lbs. This auto was featured on the cover of AutoWeek on July 19, 1993, and the Parks Duryea was the subject of an "Of Interest" report in the September 27, 1993 issue. Only one original 1893 Duryea exists today, and it is located in the Smithsonian. The prototype has a wooden frame, exactly as the original Duryea's Lady Phaeton body, and a light green leather upholstery, matching the original. Others produced have a fiberglass frame and broadcloth upholstery. The purchaser will receive a notebook of information relating to the car, including a copy of the original bill of sale, original promotional brochures, information broadsides, photos and a copy of an April 2, 1993 report from NewsOK.com on the theft of the theft of the prototype that occurred when the builder stopped in Tulsa on his way to Dallas to begin a 9-city tour to promote the 100th Anniversary of the American automobile and the first Duryea. The owner's truck and the enclosed trailor hauling the one-of-a-kind reproduction were stolen from the parking lot of the Tulsa motel, and were recovered a year later through the involvement of Crime Stoppers. After 18 years of ownership, the owner has decided to give another the opportunity to own this great recreational reproduction of America's first horseless carriage.
