Item Details
Description
We are pleased to offer this lot which showcases an absolutely GORGEOUS & Scarce 1904-1914 RS Prussia hand finished, properly marked Wreath & Star, large integral handled floral celery dish, potted at the Reinhold Schlegelmilch Tillowitz, Silesia, Germany factory between 1904 & 1914. Our stunning RS Prussia dish is the Mold #182 (an exact match can be found on Page #70 / Plate #153 of The Collectors Encyclopedia of R.S. Prussia, Series 3), and is finished in the popular floral decoration FD14 representing two pink roses + one orange rose, all over a cluster of white daisies. Our prominent celery also features the concentric domed rim with light green accenting and tasteful gilding. It weighs 12 oz. and measures 12.25 x 6 x 1.5 inches high, and constitutes a valuable RS Prussia collectible. xxxxxxxxxxxx. The history of RS Prussia Porcelain dates back to 1869, with the opening of the Reinhold Schlegelmilch Porcelain factory in Tillowitz, Silesia, Germany, as well as a decorating studio in Suhl, Thuringia, Germany. The RS Prussia Wreath & Star mark was derived from its founder, Reinhold Schlegelmilch, and was later used by his sons Erhard and Arnold, after his passing. These two Reinhold facilities produced the finest and most innovative hard paste Art Nouveau porcelain in the world from the end of the Victorian era ca. 1892 up until the beginning of World War I. During the early part of this period, most of the pieces exported to the United States sported the ca. 1895 RS Steeple marks that were augmented in 1903 / 1904 by the red and green RS Prussia aforementioned Wreath & Star signature. However, history records that this mark only proliferated from the early 1900s to ca. 1914. In 1910, Reinhold’s Tillowitz factory reputedly changed exclusively to the Green RS Germany Wreath & Star, with Suhl maintaining the Red & green stamp to 1914, and after 1918, Tillowitz added other colors as well. The Tillowitz factory survived beyond 1915, the point at which the Suhl factory was forced to close forever as a causality of WW I. Both RS Steeple & RS Prussia marks paralleled the RS Germany Wreath & Star, and are recorded until 1914 / 1915. The RS Germany mark from the Tillowitz factory was seen until its last documented use in 1938. One major distinction can be made between the 1904 through 1914 RS Prussia, and the 1910 to 1938 RS Germany forms; RS Prussia porcelain is known both for the complexity of its molds and for the beauty of the patterns, most of which were applied using floral transfers, as well as varying degrees of hand decoration, including gilding or heavy enamel to augment depth of florals and portraits. The Prussia molds were far more interpretive Art Nouveau and brighter in finish than virtually any other porcelain available, based upon the world’s preference in that era, while the Germany forms are far more geometric, and found in more subtle florals & colors, which became the fashion in the 1920s & 1930s. It is also worth noting that more high quality export blanks were produced at the Tillowitz factory than at any other single European facility. Pickard Decorating Studios was one of the consistent US purchasers of this spectacular porcelain.
