Item Details
Description
We are very pleased to present this raised, double cornucopia bud vase in the 1962 Medley line from the Hull Pottery Co. Our vase is the tallest of the Medley line, which was marketed from the 1960s through 1970s chain stores. The elevated dark green base,is impressed with Hull #103 USA, and the vase is in VG condition with a factory over-fire rim spot. It weighs 1# 13 oz. and measures 7.75 x 3.75 x 9 inches tall. xxxxxxxxxxx. E. Hull Pottery (Addis Emmet Hull) was founded in 1905 in Crooksville, Ohio, initially producing stoneware. By 1907, Hull Pottery had already expanded by adding a second plant and had grown to employ over 200 workers. By 1920, Hull was producing a wide variety of quality stoneware, planters, and art pottery, incorporating new airbrushed and blended glaze techniques. A.E. Hull passed in 1930, and Addis E. Hull, Jr. succeeded his father in the management of the business, leaving the company in 1937 to become the General Manager of the Shawnee Pottery company. Gerald F. Watts became the new manager of Hull Pottery in 1937, and from the latter 1930s through the 1950s, Hull capitalized in the growing interest in art pottery and introduced several lines of matte finish, pastel, and floral items in the shape of vases, planters, ewers, and bowls, most in varying sizes. Tremendously successful late 1940s patterns included the spectacular Bow-Knot, Camellia, Dogwood, Poppy and Water Lily. Their most successful items were the Little Red Riding Hood cookie jars which were patented in 1943 and began an entire new production line of figural kitchen and novelty items which continued well into the 1950s. Despite the June 19, 1950, destruction of the plant by flood and the resulting fire (caused by exploding kilns), Hull's excellent reputation with its customers and buyers alike, promoted the company to quickly rebuild and re-open on January 1, 1952 as "The Hull Pottery Company". J.B. Hull became General Manager, and issued in the new era of high gloss finishes. Although traditionally best known for their pastel matte glazed ware, some of the high gloss lines such as Blossom Flite, and Ebb Tide were exceptionally well received. Rosella, glossy coral on a pink clay body, was produced for a short time only; and Magnolia, although offered in a matte glaze, was produced in gloss as well. Despite the company rebuilding and equipping their new factory with the most modern of machinery, it was soon apparent that Hull would never be able to duplicate the classic 1940s matte glazes again. Hull moved more & more to the production of decorative kitchen ware, until the Hull Pottery was forced to cease production in 1985.
