Description
A large Roman iron nail said to be found near Hadrian’s Wall, c. 2nd Century AD, well-preserved with wide, flat head. L: 19 1/3 in (49cm). The nail is mounted to a block of oak with written details in black on each edge. The first reads: “Roman Nail Found near Hadrian’s Wall (Romano Britain) in the Latter Part of the Nineteenth Century.” The second reads: “Oak Block from the Queen’s Estate (Crown Estate) Windsor, Great Park, Windsor Berks, England.” One each short end is a small note: “Authenticated” & “Nail From around 50 AD.” Ex West Sussex, England, private collection. A rather curious item with an interesting provenance.
