Description
Roman Empire, North Africa, ca. 1st- 2nd century CE. A stunning example of a roman redware portrait vessel, depicting a handsome priest in an incredibly Roman veristic way. Incised detail of the hair and eye-lashes adorn the strong cheekbones, chin, nose, eyes, and mouth. Priest is wearing a ceremonial head covering, indicating his piety. Covering has incised design of both a water and zig-zag design. A spout is placed at the top of head, with looping handle descending from spout to back of head. Smooth and thick terra sigillata throughout. 9"H.
