Description
Rare matched pair of original Chinese Tang Dynasty (619-907 AD) Lokapala figures, of sancai glazed earthenware with unglazed faces and hands. Lokapalas, or Buddhist Heavenly Kings, are guardians of the four cardinal points. Portrayed as powerful military figures, they were once buried with a Chinese king or nobleman in order to protect the spirit of the dead from evil forces. Each figure is dressed in armor and wearing a phoenix headdress, with one arm raised to hold a spear while standing on a yaksha or spirit figure, supported by a pierced rock work base. Each 40"h x 20"w x 10"d. Provenance: Eskenazi Gallery, London, England, 2001.
