Commemorative Framing of “U.S. Grant”

c. 1870, Commemorative “OUR OLD COMMANDER,” Mounted and Framed “U.S. Grant” Image, Choice Very Fine.
A beautifully mounted 5” x 4” sepia-toned cabinet card photo of U.S. Grant is elaborately framed by a 15” x 13” woodcut template in the shape of his initials (“USG”), and adorned with cutout letters, ivy leaves, and the words: “OUR OLD COMMANDER.” The photo and blonde-colored woodcut template is placed against a large black felt background, and framed under glass by a large, shadowbox wooden frame, 24” x 20” and 4.25” deep. The craftsmanship of the scrolly woodcut template is a wonder to behold. The wood frame is worn, and the woodcut template is loose, but the overall beauty of the piece is unaffected. An original work of art dedicated to the Civil War hero and President.
