Description
Leo Kenney (1925-2001 Washington) ''Night Blooming Vessel'' 1956 Oil on Canvas 51''x31.5''. A very important surrealist work by Kenney that is referenced in nearly every biography on the artist. It depicts a Grecian urn with flower petals that bloom in iridescence. While working at Gump's San Francisco, Kenney was preparing for a gallery showing at Ziville Gallery, Hollywood in 1954. Discouraged after the show netted no sales and with his mother's passing in 1955, Kenney would complete one painting from 1954 to 1960, ''Night Blooming Vessel''. The painting was shown once at his 1973 retrospective at the Seattle Art Museum. It has since remained in the private collection of a close friend, Patricia Buck. It has the 1973 Seattle Art Museum Retrospective Exhibition label on the verso. This piece is pictured in the catalog that accompanied the exhibition on page 27. It has overall scattered craquelure. From the private collection of Patricia M. Buck, Wisconsin.
