Item Details
Description
attributed to Herter Brothers, New York City. circa 1870. with exceptionally well carved features exhibiting fine gilded surface and painted lower panel. H69 1/4" W52" D15" Note 1: In shaping, form, and gilding, this cabinet is comparable to one in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, inscribed on verso "Oliver Ames/ Boston," along with an example commissioned by J.P. Morgan in the early 1880's. With original surface gilding, delicate and precise carving, and excellent form, this is a fine example of Herter Brother's work during this period. Note 2: With cherry primary wood and magnolia secondary. Magnolia wood was commonly sold during this time period as poplar because after harvesting and dressing, the woods were nearly identical. Microanalysis has been preformed on both the primary and secondary woods.
