Expressive rural scene in the impasto painting technique of the German late impressionists, paintings by the artist achieve up to 8,000 euros on the international auction market

This oil painting with the depiction of a rural scene was created by the painter Hans Hartig in 1919. A group of farmers is about to plow the field with their equipment. Executed in impasto paint application in the style of the late Impressionism the painter manages here to combine a particularly expressive landscape with a rustic genre scene in a slightly muted color palette. The oil painting further bears verso another landscape, possibly a composition study. From an elevated point of view, the observer looks here through a well-maintained group of small trees upon a lake with sailing boats in the background. The parapet in the foreground bears the inscription ‘Buch ... Hempel & Co GmbH Berlin ...’ as well as the date ‘1919’.



The oil painting bears the ligated signature "HHARTIG" lower left and is in very good condition with insignificant signs of age. It measures 33.5 x 48 cm. The frame shows only slight traces of use and measures 43 x 56.5 cm.



Hans Hartig (1873-1936)

Hans Hartig was born 1873 in the Pomeranian Karvin. In 1895, Hartig enrolled at the Berlin Academy, where he studied under Paul Vorgang and also in the landscape class under Eugen Bracht, whose master student he eventually became. The subjects of his paintings show buildings, towns or ports and were presented regularly since 1901, among others at the Große Berliner Kunstausstellung, the Berlin Secession as well as in the Münchener Glaspalast and the 11th Venice Biennale. In addition to that Hartig was co-founder of the Pomeranian Künstlerbund in 1916 and received the honorary prize of the Association of Berlin Artists in 1932/33.
