Charming painting from a series of Potsdam city views by Hübner; similar works fetch over 10,000 euros at international auctions

This painting by Ulrich Hübner (1872-1932) was created around 1920 and depicts the City Palace in Potsdam. Huebner has created numerous views of Potsdam, especially during the winter. The present work depicts a summer view rendered with a brisk, broad brushwork. Inspired by the tradition of the French Impressionists – especially Monet –Hübner transferred their ideas of color onto his own oeuvre and created works such as this, whose romantic treatment of light reveals the charms of his luminous color palette.



The painting is in very good condition with only minor marks due to rubbing of the frame. It is signed ‘Ulrich Hübner’ lower right. The frame shows minor wear. The framed work measures 62.5 x 77 cm, the stretcher frame measures 50 x 65.5 cm.



Ulrich Hübner (1872-1932)

Ulrich Hübner, born into an important family of artists, started his academic training in Karlsruhe in 1892 under Robert Poetzelberger, Gustav Schönleber and Carlos Grethe. Subsequently, he attended Friedrich Fehr’s private school in Munich. In 1899 Hübner became a member of the Berliner Secession. In 1905 he was one of the first laureates of the Villa Romana Fellowship. Further awards followed and his works were exhibited in Berlin, Munich, Dresden and even in San Francisco in 1915. In the tradition of the French Impressionists, Hübner painted mainly in and around Berlin as well as in Hamburg, Lübeck, Warnemünde and Travemünde, where he created many maritime themes.
