This oil painting was created by the painter Adolf Lins around 1920. Lins was a student of the so-called Düsseldorf School of Painting that was mainly established during the 19th century, representing a rather realistic and socially critical view of art. In addition to the history and portrait paintings their focused developed with greater importance on landscape and genre paintings. Our painting by Adolf Lins also stands in the tradition of the Düsseldorf landscape paintings, which were mainly influenced by the painter Johann Wilhelm Schirmer, who was in turn influenced by the Dutch landscapes of Jacob van Ruisdael. Here, Lins presents an idyllic landscape that is covered by an approaching thunderstorm. The cloudy sky is reflected in the surface of the water that is covered by water lilies on the right side below the tree, whose leaves as well as the grass blades are executed in particularly fine ductus. A lovely group of ducks appears with bright feathers, strolling through the grass alongside a fallen tree trunk.
The painting is signed lower right ‘Ad. Lins’ and is in a carefully restored condition with a short tear at the upper left, and minor age related craquelure, otherwise very good overall. The frame also shows slight signs of wear and measures 78 x 97 cm. The dimension of the stretcher is 60 x 80.5 cm.
