Ruth Orkin (1921-1985)
Born in 1921 to a toy manufacturer father and silent-film actress mother, Orkin grew up in the golden age of Hollywood. She began photographing as a teen, taking pictures of her friends and teachers. In 1943, she moved to New York, working as a nightclub photographer, and took baby pictures in the day. She went on to work for major magazines, and took photos of some of the greatest musicians. She traveled around Europe, taking her most famous photograph, An American Girl in Italy, in the 1950s. She married filmmaker Morris Engel, and together they produced two feature films. Orkin has been shown in various exhibits at the Met, Nikon House, and the World\'s Fair. She taught at the School of Visual Arts and International Center of Photography in New York City.
