Photographs of the actress Marilyn Monroe are highly popular collectible; the photographer George Barris was a close friend of the actress which is why his pictures convey a true intimacy
This photograph by the American photographer George Barris shows the superstar Marilyn Monroe. During her life she was the most famous and probably the most photographed woman in the world, and was later names one of the greatest female Hollywood actresses. George Barris first met Marilyn Monroe in 1954 on location for her movie ‘The Seven Year Itch’ in New York, which is where they became friends. He was the last professional photographer to take photographs of the actress. The photograph on hand was taken on this last shoot.
The photograph of Marilyn Monroe is in very good condition. Verso with copyright stamp and publisher’s stamp: “Authentic Edition, One West Publishing, Limited Edition 158/200, Date 5-16-2006“. The measurements are 50.7 x 40.7 cm.
George Barris (born 1922)
George Barris was born in New York City. His first camera was given to him by his brother Willie for his sixth birthday. Fascinated by the device, he soon learnt to operate it, always carrying one with him. He was an official army photographer in the Second World War from 1942 to 1945. He became a freelance photographer after the war. Travelling through the US and Canada, he took many photographs of events and celebrities, including Steve McQueen, Charlie Chaplin, Marlon Brando, John Wayne, Elizabeth Taylor, Clark Gable, Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe. Barris first met Marilyn Monroe in 1954. Their last encounter was on July 13, 1962, roughly one month before her untimely death.
