The present etching in colors, titled ‘Lichtes Monument’ (= light monument), is a work by Markus Lüpertz. It is print number 9 from a limited edition of 10 copies. In this expressive work a monument is depicted in brown lines on a rose-colored underground. The monument is surrounded by an entanglement of green lines. Pink outlines suggest figuratively drawn shapes. It is a very characteristic work of the artist from the late 1980s.



The etching is monogrammed lower right in pencil ‘ML’ and numbered ‘9/10’ lower left. Apart from minimal handling creases in the margins, the print is in very good condition. The plate measures 29.4 x 24.9 cm and the dimensions of the sheet are 76.1 x 54.8 cm.



Markus Lüpertz (b. 1941)

Markus Lüpertz started to train as a painter as well as a graphic designer, however, he never finished either course. He then studied at the Werkkunstschule in Krefeld. A study course at the cloister Maria Laach followed. He visited the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf until he was exmatriculated after the first semester. After a productive period in Berlin, he worked as a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe and at the summer academy in Salzburg. From 1988 until 2009 he was rector at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf. He took part at the documenta VII in Kassel. His works are in the possession of the collections of important international art museums, like the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art New York, the Museum of Modern Art New York, the Harvard University Art Museums and the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum.
