This signed collage by Robert Rauschenberg carries the title ‘Most Distant Visible Part of the Sea’ and dates to 1983. Printed In offset the artist depicts different views around the sea. Upper right two embossed sunshades are accentuated with contour-lines in pencil. A blooming lily lower left is covered by a translucent fabric. Thus the work is a typical example of Rauschenberg’s collages, in which he combines different techniques.


The sheet is framed under mat in a white wooden frame, which has got iron handles in the upper corners for the hanging. The collage is below signed, numbered and dated by the artist in pencil ‘RAUSCHENBERG, 29/125, 83’. At the lower right corner is an embossing in the shape of a star. The work is in very good condition, the backside shows some stains. The frame shows some signs of wear. The sheet measures 72.5 x 52.7 cm and the total dimensions, including the frame, are 91 x 72 cm.



Robert Rauschenberg (1925-2008)

The early works of the American painter and graphic artist are part of the pop-art movement. He is known for his ‘Combines’, artworks that he made during the 1950s. In this artform the painter and sculptor united non-traditional materials with objects to innovative combinations. He received the National Medal of Arts in 1993. And in 1995, he was awarded the Leonardo da Vinci World Award of Arts. Until his death in 2008, he had lived in New York City and Florida.
