Andreas Paul Weber leaves a comprehensive graphic and lithographic body of work, which is characteristic mainly in the time-critical and satirical style; lithographs by Andreas Paul Weber fetch up to 3,000 Euros at international auctions

This lithograph is a signed work by the German artist Andreas Paul Weber (1893-1980), who mainly created time-critical and satirical pieces. The present illustration depicts the funeral of a harlequin, who is lying open in a coffin. The single figures are drawn caricature-like in Weber’s characteristic manner. Amongst the bereaved are generals, judges and intellectuals.



The sheet bears the stamp of the Clan Press, which was founded by Weber in 1925, lower left. It is in good condition. The margins show few faint creases, the paper minor time staining. Verso at the upper left corner a pale glue stain due to former mount. The dimensions of the subject are ca. 39 x 54.3 cm and the sheet measures ca. 49 x 63 cm.



Andreas Paul Weber (1893-1980)

Andreas Paul Weber attended for a short period of time the Kunstgewerbeschule Erfurt. He was a member of the Romanticist youth movement ‘Jung-Wandervogel’. During many hikes with the group he received a lot of inspiration for the nature depictions in his works and he started creating his first autodidactic lithographs. He served in the military service during the First World War. He was able to work as a draughtsman at the Eastern frontier for the magazine of the 10th Army.

A large number of designs for book illustrations of Reineke Fucks, Hans Sachs, Till Eulenspiegel and Münchhausen are his. He was the publisher of the magazine ‘Kritischer Kalender’. Additionally, he worked for Ernst Niekisch’s magazine ‘Widerstand’ (= opposition), which was connected to an opposition movement in the scope of which Weber was arrested in 1937 and came to the concentration camp in Hamburg-Fuhlsbüttel; he then was imprisoned for six months in Berlin and Nuremberg. Weber also had to serve in the military in the Second World War. In 1971, he was honored with the Große Verdienstkreuz and got appointed as a professor. In 1973, the A. Paul Weber-Museum opened on the Dome peninsula of Ratzeburg.
