Charles Evans Hughes (1862-1948) Statesman. Hughes was an American statesman, lawyer and Republican politician from New York. He served as the 36th Governor of New York, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, Secretary of State, a judge on the Court of International Justice, and the 11th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. He was the Republican candidate in the 1916 U.S. Presidential election, losing narrowly to Woodrow Wilson. 11 ¾†x 8 ¾†curious certificate prepared by one Robley Durham Stevens for Hughes signature, April 1933, which is signed.
