Edmond Hoyle (1672-1769) British writer. Hoyle is best known for his works on the rules and play of card games. The phrase Ć¢ā¬Åaccording to HoyleĆ¢ā¬ came into the language as a reflection of his generally-perceived authority on the subject. His book, Mr. HoyleĆ¢ā¬ā¢s Games of Whist, Quadrille, Piquet, Chess and Back-gammon, Printed for Thomas Osborne, 1759, original brown calf leather, eleventh edition, front cover loose, spine label missing, original owners name on the first blank page. The book is signed by Hoyle on the title page and by Osborne on the page facing the title page. The book is contained in a custom red-cloth covered clamshell case with the title printed on the spine.
