Harold Alexander, 1st Earl Alexander of Tunis (1891-1969) British Field Marshal. Alexander was made British commander in chief in the Mediterranean theatre in 1942, where he formed a highly successful duo with his chief field commander, General Bernard Montgomery. Together they reorganized British forces and drove the Germans back from Egypt and across North Africa until the surrender of the Germans in Tunis in May 1943. 6 ¼†x 8†autograph letter signed, “Alexander,†personal stationery, April 23, 1963, to Jacob Bacal. “…I have always felt that it was a great honor to have commanded American soldiers in battle – and I am grateful to them for the great contribution they made to our common victory….†Includes the original envelope which is addressed by Alexander.
