Description
A fine porcelain cane of a Brazilian diplomat. The porcelain floral decorated ball handle is 1 2/3” in diameter. It is fashioned in angled lines of fluting and is capped with a 7/8” circular gold disc with scalloped edges and an incised Brazilian Coat of Arms that was adapted in the late 19th Century. (See Google for examples). The ball handle sits on a decorated gold cup-collar that is incised with a crown and “ 2 Abril 1803” the significance of which is not known at this time. The shaft is finely figured snakewood with a 1 1/4 burnished brass and rusted iron ferrule. The overall length is 36 1/8” and the condition is very good. It supposedly belonged to a Brazilian diplomat who at this point remains unknown. Found in England, it is ca 1890, and its history will require more research. Regardless, it is a lovely example of the kind, made of very high quality materials and undoubtedly owned by a person of importance. Estimate: $2000-$3000
