Description
A unique olivewood cane from the Greek Isle of Corfu. Made of a single piece of olivewood, it has a short “L” handle that is 1 1/2” thick and 2 1/2” to the side. It depicts a fierce looking head of an unknown animal with sharp fangs, emerging from foliage. On the opposite side, at the top of the shaft, a man with heavy moustache and beard is carved above: “Kepkypa”, the capital city of Corfu. (The man may represent a peasant or aged occupant of the Island.) A 1” burnished brass ferrule completes the piece. The overall length is 36” and the condition is very good. It is ca 1900 and is a nice example in unusual form. (These pieces were sometimes called priest’s canes because members of the Greek Orthodox clergy often carried them.) Estimate: $450-$650
