Description
An outstanding silver Art Nouveau figural cane. The reticulated silver knob handle is 3 1/3” high and 1 1/2” at its widest. It is marked “Sterling” with the maker’s mark of William B. Kerr & Co., Newark New Jersey. It depicts in superb fashion, the faces of three lions with open mouths. It is highly decorated with classical seashells, “C” scrolls, and round spherules, undoubtedly inspired by the work of their contemporary Newark rival, Unger Brothers. (The William B. Kerr Company made very high quality sterling silver objet d’art with emphasis on Art Nouveau styling. They worked from the 1880’s to 1927, when they were absorbed by the Gorham Company of Rhode Island. A paper showing some of Kerr’s fine work along with their hallmarks will accompany this lot.) The shaft is macassar ebony with a 7/8” replaced brass ferrule. The overall length is 35 2/3” and the condition is very good. It is American, ca 1900 and it is a great example of quality American silver work fashioned in Art Nouveau. Estimate: $1200-$1800
