Description
An uncommon gimlet gadget cane. The wood tau handle is 2” high and 4 3/4” long. It unscrews above a 1” steel collar to reveal a 20” gimlet. (A gimlet, or borer, was used to drill into trees to test internal contents before felling. Please see page 250, 25/24 of Dike’s Cane Curiosa to see a gimlet cane example and read how they were used.) The hardwood shaft is sponge-decorated in random splotches. It terminates with a 2” pointed steel ferrule. The overall length is 34 1/4” and the condition is very good. It is French, ca 1890, and possibly made by the Saint-Etienne Company. It is a very good example of a usable tool gadget cane. Estimate: $900-$1300
